General Information

The first settlement known to Datça on the peninsula begins with the Karia people about 4000 years ago. Over the centuries thereafter, the Mycenae were used by the Dorians, the Persians, the Greater Alexander, the Rhodes, the Romans, the Byzantines, and finally the Osmalians as habitats. Today Datça was named as Reşadiye by the Ottomans in 1909. Reşadiye has become a district of the Datça district today. Ongoing excavations in the area of Knidos, Burgas and Yellow Ports around the Datça district bring new daily artifacts and valuable finds to the light every day. Ongoing excavations are the result of the resulting work and the information obtained proves that the most important civilizations of the history prevail on the Anatolian soil. Knidos has been one of the most important haunt and haven of the seafarers throughout history. The fact that Knidos and its environs are one of the major sea routes is also home to many of the naves that have settled in the storms in history. The Knidos lighthouse on the Datça peninsula is theoretically regarded as the point where the Aegean and the Mediterranean meet.
